Wilderness

2013 · Pinhole Photography · Dimensions variable

A wilderness can be small. A puddle, the underside of a rock, a few small patches of forest floor become vast when the scale we bring to them shifts.

The photographs are made with a pinhole camera built from a matchbox. Without a lens the depth of field is infinite, so there is no difference between near and far, and no distortion at a wide angle.

The things in the photographs stay recognisable. Nothing shows how big they are. In that gap the small places open out.

The camera and the low position came from Journey, photographed the year before. The wilderness started here, and it carried into Unrequited and We Sand and Trees Form Strata Together.
