Canopy
2024, ongoing · 3D Animation, sound
The camera dives down among the trees and circles between them, moving to unseen clay bells. It could be called a dance.
The same trees that move around the still viewer in Forest are here approached from above, and the camera weaves in and out between the trunks. It is the first animation I have made where the viewpoint travels. The work was made in collaboration with composer Julie Zhu, and the interaction between sound and trees intuitively required a moving perspective.
The sound is built from a recording of real ceramic bells. The players are anonymous. You hear the resonance of fired clay and the rhythm of a hand, and the bells are invisible.
Canopy is a canopy of trees and a canopy of bells. It is meant to shelter. I don’t know who’s protecting who.
