Tender Unknown

2025 · 3D Animation, sound, installation

The tenderness we feel for trees, and the distance inside that feeling.

We live alongside trees, pass the same ones for years, and come to feel something for them that is close to affection. Tender Unknown was installed in the Spökparken pavilion, Stockholm. Trees from the park were 3D scanned, simulated as cloth and projected onto its wooden walls. Sound composed by Julie Zhu filled the small interior with low murmurs. In the animation they have lost their weight and move in a wind. The scans keep enough of each tree to be recognisable and enough distortion to stay strange. They are there and not quite there. The animations moved across wood while the trees they came from stood just outside.

A smaller version was later shown at Juxtapose Art Fair in Aarhus, projected faintly onto plaster and brick, with no park outside.
